With an innovative concept for a non-profit brewery, help from friends and family, and a talented young head brewer, Joel Gregory’s dream of Ex Novo Brewing came one step closer to reality when he called SUM. After creating multiple schemes in various buildings, Joel and SUM found a former lighting manufacturing building in North Portland that was a perfect fit for the upstart company. By reclaiming timber, making the most of a character-filled existing interior, and accenting with custom lighting, the space was a hit from day one, drawing crowds of hundreds on its opening night. Design elements include a 16’ “live edge” bartop and reclaimed fence boards wrapping interior spaces at 45 degree angles. With a 15’ overhead door addressing a city park, and sited one block from the city’s largest bike route, Ex Novo promises to be a continued part of Portland’s beer scene for a long time to come.
