Dark Horse Comics contracted SUM early in the firm’s history to help them update and modify their stock of buildings spanning several blocks in downtown Milwaukie, Oregon.  The company’s growing force of artists, producers, and filmmakers is responsible for some of our most well known and beloved comics and cartoons, and their brand identity is as eclectic as their host of characters.  When SUM engaged with the client on this building, the challenge was equal parts structural rehabilitation of a crumbling unreinforced masonry building, and rejuvenating a dark and dreary space with new light, color and warm wood tones.  The final product houses artists in a building that showcases glimpses of the original building’s facade around a core that is revitalized with modern finishes, textures, and lighting, with showpieces of Dark Horse’s cartoon repertoire displayed throughout the space.
